No theres no shame.
You gotta remember not all reading is about intellectual pursuits. While I feel that it makes you a better more rounded individual to be intellectually well read. Some reading is just about entertainment.
Its like when you see something impossible in the movies, if its dang good entertainment, well theres nothing wrong with having some fun every now and then.

No, I think that reading for amusement and relaxation is very important.
I favor fantasy novels with zero socially redeeming values ( think dark elves and soul-sucking swords) myself- but to give up ALL of your reading time to "serious" topics seems like a great way to end up reading less and not liking to read!!

Well, it isn't literature, but you're not harming anyone….as long as you don't actually think that that is an ideal way to conduct relationships! I cannot read them, I always hate the central characters so much it turns me into a seething hater of idiotic women who cannot make a decent decision on their own.

I love Christie too.

Hi, Hon,
You don't need to explain your taste in reading material.
I am not a fan of Romance novels, mainly because it sounds too fantastic and I have become jaded by life. You have to suspend disbelief to have fun reading.
I can't get past the "romantic ideal".

But, I can read Sc-Fi (Robert Heinlein-Stranger in a Strange Land) and buy far-out stories. I've read hundreds of Sci-Fi. I loved everything written by Vonnegut, who specialized in satire, (Welcome to the Monkey House). He made me laugh. For such, I can easily believe the fantasy.

As an aside (and a bit of confession), Taylor Caldwell wrote novels like Captains and Kings and she was very much like Margaret Mitchell, but much more prolific.
I read Caldwell as a 12 year-old. Now, after everything I've been through in my life, I understand that people miss chances and screw up their lives because of pride and selfishness. This was a common theme in her writing, even though you would have to characterize them as romances. No one lived happily ever after. I thought, "What a waste!"
But, she was right. Told you I was jaded.

Read whatever you want to read, but if you're embarrassed to talk about it, you don't have to. I'll flip through one of those books occasionally just for the sex scenes, and that's it. Otherwise, I find it a total waste of printer ink.

fiction is for fun. YOu should read the kind of novels you enjoy reading, there is absolutely no point in reading a novel you don't enjoy, unless you're studying English literature at college or something. Personally, I am more of a muder mystery fan myself, but if chikc lit is what you like then read it.

As for current affairs, i watch the news first thing in the morning because that's the only time of day I am strong enough to cope with it. For non-fiction reading matter on the whole I prefer history, biography and travel books.

But I honestly couldn't care less what anyone else thinks of what I read. You need to develop the confidence to read what you like and not bother about what other people think of your reading tastes.

I believe romance novels sell more copies than any other kind of fiction, so there must be loads of women who share your tastes.

There is no shame in using your intelligence, try not to be too influenced by what others might think! There is little harm for you in reading chick lit and romance novels.
Yearning to be loved and to love someone else is an ideal that most women and men were brought up to believe in. Without that drive to love and be loved, we would not exist.

Often, people put others down because they are afraid and need to feel superior any way they can.

Lighthouse no there shouldn't be ANY of shame, because you're enjoying chick literature. duh..you're woman after all

actually its much better then enjoying gossipy yellow piss- gossips magazines like "enquirer", or "teen people", or "people"
