outsiders such as henry david thoreau or ralph waldo emerson. they are transcendentalists and did not believe in conforming to society. they liked nature a lot, they both thought that one should be his own man (self-reliance). they wrote in the 19th century i think. theses are probably the most interesting mavericks in american lit.
